After summer camp, weight training, regular practices and last week’s scrimmage the Sand Devils football team will finally kick off what they hope will be another successful season this Friday against the Payson Longhorns.
Sand Devils football head coach Mitchell Stephens got a better idea of his team’s preparedness during last week’s scrimmage games, and for the most part he liked what he saw.
They played against both Bradshaw and Combs high schools. Each team is allowed to run 60 offensive plays and 60 defensive plays, divided between the two teams.
During the scrimmage coaches are allowed to be on the field with their players which allows coaches to see and make necessary changes.
“It was especially helpful on defense,” said coach Stephens. “We were able to key them in on things they need to be seeing, such as tight ends lining up. A scrimmage is just a glorified practice, but for us it’s one more opportunity to go against a real opponent and get that detail coaching in.”
Going into Friday’s game Coach Stephens says he has most of his starters figured out, but expects to make some adjustments after seeing how his players perform in their first game.
This Friday’s game is at home, Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
