Lady Sand Devils advance to state quarterfinals

The Lady Sand Devils advanced to the quarterfinals of the 3A State Championship tournament after defeating Ganado 60-38 in the tournament’s second round Friday.

It was the third time the Lady Sand Devils and the Lady Hornets have met this season. Page beat them 40- 21 in their first meeting, and 63-42 in their second meeting.

The Lady Sand Devils played a fast-paced slashing and passing offense the first two quarters, led by their intense, driving point guard Alyssa Harris. Page had built what felt like a comfortable 25-13 lead going into halftime.

The Lady Sand Devils took their foot off the gas in the third quarter, but Ganado did not. By the end of the third quarter, Ganado had reduced Page’s lead to seven points. But the Sand Devils took notice and stoked up their offense and defense in the fourth quarter. The offense added 19 points, while allowing the Hornets just four points.

The final score read Page 60, Ganado 38.

The Sand Devils got great play from deep in their bench Friday, as they have all season long, but three players had exceptionally good nights. All but 11 points came from Alyssa Harris, who had 15 points, Sofia Cambridge, who had 17, and Tayla Franklin, who had 17.

Girls’ basketball head coach Celeste Claw was happy with her team’s performance.

“We showed up in the first half and finished strong in the fourth quarter,” she said. “Our girls understand the deal here.”

Coach Claw is hoping to take the energy she saw Friday night into the rest of the playoffs.

“Cambridge and Alyssa have been my two most productive scorers this season, and Franklin had a huge night. What she did was a big spark for the team.”
