This year’s Special Olympics was held last Friday morning at the Page High School track.
“It went great. I have no complaints,” said Special Olympics head coach Damian Rosas. “We had the usual bumps and bruises but overall it couldn’t have gone better.”
Around 65 athletes competed in this year’s event. They included students from throughout the Page Unified School District as well as athletes from Hopi.
About 85 of the volunteers were Page High students. The volunteers helped get everything set up and in place and at the end of the meet they broke everything down, stored it away and cleaned up the facilities. While the meet was taking place a volunteer was also paired with each athlete.
Volunteers also helped with timing races and measuring the distance events, such as the long jump. or shot put.
Kristy Rivers, one of this year’s Special Olympics coordinators, said every Special Olympics is a success and this year was no exception.
“This is one of the greatest opportunities for those with special needs to show off their amazing abilities and show that they’re really not much different than the rest of us.”
