Bee Valvo was injured Sunday, June 24 after a collision between a jet ski and a boat. Prior to the accident Valvo had been kayaking on Lake Powell and later transferred into a boat with friends and they towed the kayak behind the boat.
According to reports from the National Park Service, the boat slowed down to come off plane and a jet skier, which was following the boat, failed to slow down. It hit the kayak which acted like a ramp and caused the fast-moving jet ski to fly onto the boat where it landed on top of Valvo and pinned her there. Those on board were unable to lift the jet ski off Valvo.
The boat motored back to Antelope Point where they sought help lifting the jet ski off the passenger.
Crews successfully removed the jet ski off Valvo. She was then airlifted to Flagstaff Medical Center by Classic Aviation.
Valvo is a nurse practitioner for Encompass Health. The most recent report is that she is in stable condition.
The jet skier was Norman Medoff, 69 years old, from Flagstaff, Ariz. He had minor injuries to his upper body. No alcohol was involved.
According to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Lt. Seth Cutchen, Medoff was following too close to the boat and was unable to stop his speed.
