Page kicked off October with two big events this year, one organized by the city and the Americans Motorcycle Club’s (AMC) 39th annual Oktoberfest. The Page-Lake Powell Chamber of Commerce sponsored the latter event at Steer 89 and held their annual Chile Cook-Off October 5.

The Chronicle spoke with AMC member John Swenteman; his road name is Father Time. Swenteman is in the Patriot chapter of the club.

“Every chapter in the local areas picks up cancer kids and helps the family out,” said Swenteman. “And we also help children with other medical problems. In the city of Page, we help the food kitchen, the food bank, foster kids, toys for tots, the senior citizens. We spend about six grand a year on those classes and graduation, and that's a yearly thing.

“And then right now we have three kids that we're sponsoring. We have one [who] has seizures, constant seizures, and they're trying to find out exactly what's causing it. So we're helping that family out. We've got two others that have cancer that we're helping. A lot of the stuff we do, we pay for the gas money, the food, the motels, and the stuff that insurance doesn't cover.”

This year, there were 12 competing in the Chile Cook-Off. Chamber Director Judy Franz sent the Chronicle the names of this year’s winners and those who made the event possible.

Chili Cook-Off Winners. 1. Prickley Pear Kitchen. 2. Brenda Dominick. 3. Davey Brown From the Bowl. Thanks to all who participated and thank you to The Americans for sharing the day with us. Special thanks to Steer 89, Joe Lapekas, Chris Van Meenen, David Blake and Lindsey Blake, and Brenda Dominick for also helping with organizing! A fun day for all!
