Major sediment slump changes conditions in Cataract Canyon

Posted

MOAB, UT—In a November 1 joint press release, Canyonlands National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area reported that a major sediment slump in Cataract Canyon had changed  water flow in the main channel, creating a new small rapid.

The slump occurred in Narrow Canyon at river mile 175.1 sometime between October 25 and October 29. Approximately 300-350 meters of shoreline slid from the river’s left bank into the river channel.

The release stated that sediment and mud was continuing to move and alter river conditions for a three-mile stretch upstream of the slump. Because of the rapidly changing conditions, it was advised that people should wear Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) between Dark Canyon and the North Wash access point. The new small rapid is located at coordinates 37.888428, -110.296780.
