Winterguard perform championship-winning show

They've been practicing and performing since December and their routine was well-polished.

Last Thursday, Winterguard performed the routine that earned them the state championship earlier this month for the home crowd.

Winterguard is coached by Katrina Wunderlich and Gwen Lasslo.

The performance was held in the Page High School gym. The team was adorned in their full performance regalia. They performed their routine twice. Between the two performances Winterguard instructor Katrina Wunderlich explained to the audience the elements of the routine that won them the state championship, and what to watch for when they perform it again the second time.

The team’s score is based on four areas: The first is how skillfully and artfully the guard moves individually and as a team. The second is how well they handle their equipment and props.

“It’s what we are physically doing with the items in our hands, whether its sabers or silks,” said Wunderlich.

The third element they are judged on is design analysis. “This is how well the overall design works and looks,” said Wunderlich. “Do the silks, props, music, costumes and movements all make sense?”

The final category is general affect. “This is the Wow Factor,” said Wunderlich. “It’s basically how the audience responds to the overall look and performance.”

Page’s Winterguard scored a 79.83.

Wunderlich said she was very proud of that score.

“No other Guard in the state scored higher than we did,” she said proudly.

Winterguard began practice the first week of December.

“I have some very devoted athletes,” Wunderlich said. “They gave me unparalleled dedication all season long. I asked them to do a lot and they did it every time. I told them early in the season that they weren’t allowed to stop getting better and they really came through.”
