Tappan unveils new 'veterans only' parking spot at City Hall

PAGE – One of Mayor Levi Tappan’s final official roles as the mayor of Page was helping veterans.

Tappan, a former U.S. Marine, has always made it a point to help and recognize veterans in his 10 years of service to Page as a board member, councilman, and mayor.

Recently, Tappan organized a benefit concert to raise funds for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Last week, he saw the first of seven ‘Reserved for Veterans’ parking spaces installed in front of City Hall.

Tappan told the Chronicle the parking spaces came about after a military mom reached out to him. She wanted to see a “veterans only parking spot at city facilities.” Like most things involving government actions, it takes time. Her 2-year-old wish finally became a reality the day before Tappan’s term as mayor ended.

Signage is important, not only to show support for veterans, groups and organizations, but to promote cities. Tappan was also instrumental in getting the State of Arizona to promote Page and Horseshoe Bend on highway signs. He wasn’t sure how many are installed, but he said he’s seen a few of them, and there’s always people standing in front of them taking selfies to share.

When asked what his future plans are after his term as mayor is over, he said, “I’m going to spend more time with my family.”
