Stabbing suspect remains in jail

Suspect attended Alcoholics Anonymous meeting before attack

Posted

Investigators believe the 22-year-old Flagstaff man who allegedly attacked a Scottsdale woman at random near the Wahweap campground on May 28 was attending an alcoholics anonymous meeting that same evening.
Christopher Alcock was booked on one felony account of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two felony counts of disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon after police say they believe he attacked Lisa Sawyer of Scottsdale in a public restroom near Loop 3 of the Wahweap campground.
According to Coconino County Sheriff reports, Sawyer was exiting the restroom shortly after 3 a.m., when a man attacked her seemingly at random. Sawyer screamed and attempted to get away as witnesses, family and friends worked to subdue the suspect.

Investigators say one man with a concealed weapons permit brandished a pistol and helped subdue the attacker. He and the group worked together to help detain the man within the bathroom until police arrived, the report stated.
Sawyer told police she didn’t initially think she was being stabbed until witnesses noticed blood on her clothing.
She sustained several puncture wounds and a laceration, but none were life threatening.
Coconino County Sheriff’s Lt. Bret Axlund told the Chronicle Alcock refused to speak to authorities after the attack, and noted he was “speaking in an unintelligible manner” and “exhibited very erratic behavior.”
Axlund said the sheriff’s office believes Alcock had been attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting that weekend, but were unable to comment as to its significance in the investigation. Although investigators believe Alcock was likely on some kind of mind-altering substance that evening, they are unsure as to what it was specifically.
Alcock has been held at the Coconino County Jail in Flagstaff since his arrest and is set to appear before a Coconino judge for a preliminary hearing June 29.
