Page High School’s varsity softball team had looked like it was off to a promising start in the 2018 season but with last weeks loss of four games they will need a new game plan for a comeback. Their overall win/loss record is tied at 8/8 with a 3-1 win/loss conference record.

The double header against the Holbrook Roadrunners was a double loss when they took to the field in Holbrook. The first game resulted in tough 10-0 shutout with no chance for a comeback throughout as the Roadrunners proved to be a more seasoned team. The second game was another loss for the Sand Devils but they gave the Roadrunners a battle for the win, final score was 10-5. The double loss was attributed to the slow pitch style of the Roadrunner’s pitcher and the inexperience of the Sand Devils to hit slow pitch.

The March Warm Up Classic held in Saint George was a five game, five inning, tournament with the Sand Devil’s wins tipping the scales 3-2. The Sand Devils shook off the slump in the first game when they were matched up against the South Sevier High Rams from Monroe, Utah.

This game proved to be the well-earned win with Shelby Blake on the mound pitching a two hitter with no home runs for the Rams. Sand Devils brought in shutout victory 10-0.

The second game paired the Sand Devils against the Logan High School Grizzlies from Logan, Utah

The Grizzlies took the win for a final score of 11-3. The Sand Devils give credit to the Grizzlies who are a good team too, with a pitcher who wouldn’t let go of a hit or run.

The third game put the Sand Devils against the Summit Academy Bears from Bluffdale, UT. The Sand Devils clinched the win through a team effort for a final score of 10-0. Blake was again on the mound pitching another shutout game with 12 straight strikeouts letting in only two hits thoughout this game.
The fourth game had the Sand Devils against the Pine View Panthers from St. George, UT. This game was an exciting five innings as the match up tested both teams’ level of skill. Blake took the mound in this stretch.

Both teams played left it all on the field but in the final inning the Panthers took the win 5-4.

The fifth and final match up was against the Millard High School Eagles from Fillmore, UT. The Sand Devils dominated this last round for 20 runs. The highlight of the game came when Tyanna Kelly brought in a beautiful grand slam which pumping up the rest of the team to win. Miya Curley took the mound for this game with a final score of 20-5.

The Sand Devils are on Spring Break practice schedule until their next game against the Tuba City Warriors Tuesday March 27 next week on home field starting at 3 p.m.

According to the coaching staff the Sand Devils will concentrate their efforts on the league games taking what they learned over the weekend and improving their skills for state conference games.
