In a battle of offenses, the Sand Devils emerged the victors over Monument Valley during last Friday’s Homecoming game.

After the 40-35 win, the Sand Devils are now 3-1 for the season and 1-0 in the 3A Northeast Section.

The Sand Devils scored first and were successful on the two-point conversion. The Mustangs found the endzone on the subsequent possession and added a field goal, making the score 8-7 Sand Devils.

Each team scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter. The Sand Devils led 28-27 at halftime.

The Sand Devils outscored the Mustangs 12-8 in the third quarter.

Trailing 35-40 late in the game, the Mustangs completed a long pass, and the receiver carried the ball to the Sand Devils 2-yard line, threatening to take the lead. But the Sand Devils defense recovered a fumble from the Mustangs’ ball carrier and returned the ball to the 26-yard line.

The final score read Sand Devils 40, Mustangs 35.

The Sand Devils travel to Window Rock this Friday to take on the 4-1 Fighting Scouts.
