Sand Devils on three-game win streak

The Sand Devils football team is now 4-4 overall after defeating Ganado 30-6 Friday night. The Sand Devils are 3-0 in the sectional play, after winning the last three games.

The keys to Friday night’s road victory was a strong defense, an on-target passing game and the addition of a new running back.

“It was a total team effort,” said head football coach Bubba Billie. “We played a solid game.”

It was a cold, windy night in Ganado, which had an effect on Page’s passing game, and may have led to some dropped passes, said Coach Billie. But Sand Devils quarterback Collin Joe still passed for 196 yards and three touchdowns.

The Sand Devils also recorded its first rushing touchdown of the season, which came from Jimmy Alvarez. Alvarez is a junior. He has played basketball and track for the Sand Devils,

but this is his first year playing football. Ever.

“He’s a great athlete,” said Coach Billie. “I’ve been after him to join the football team since before COVID. I’m glad I went after him. He’s turned out to be a heck of running back.”

The Sand Devils now turn their attention to the Wildcats, who they will play in Chinle this Friday.

“They try to get fancy on offense with direct snaps to their running back, but we know it’s coming so we won’t get caught off guard,” said Coach Billie.

Coach Billie gives a lot of credit to his defensive coordinator, Ty Bennet.

“He always does a great job preparing us for the next game,” he said.

Collin Joe also had a rushing touchdown. Alvarez had nine carries for 37 yards and one touchdown. Receiver Aidan Nix had three receptions for 145 yards and one touchdown. Receiver Connor Shirley had three receptions for 15 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Isaiah Curley had two receptions for 36 yards.
