PAGE – Not sure if it was the long 4.5-hour drive that zapped them, but it sure took a while for the Sand Devils to get rolling last Friday night in Ft. Defiance, Arizona.

Looking for their second consecutive win of the season the Page Sand Devils were able to overcome a 28-20 halftime deficit with two, second half touchdowns. Then they relied on their defense to hang on for a gritty 34-28 victory over the Window Rock Fighting Scouts.

Despite being outgained 371-274 in total yards the Sand Devils were able to capitalize on four Window Rock turnovers including a pick six by Gabe Gomez in the third quarter which tied the game at 28. The Sand Devils offensively were again led by Gomez who rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Gomez was also on the receiving end of a beautiful 18-yard touchdown pass from Robert Smith.

Smith’s biggest score of the game was his 13-yard burst in the third quarter which put the Sand Devils ahead for good 34-28. Using an opportunistic defense and some sloppy play by the Fighting Scouts, the Sand Devils were able to pitch a shutout in the second half and secure that second win.

The Sand Devils are now 2-0 in the 3A North Division and 2-5 overall. Homecoming is this week and the Sand Devils will need to be ready to play as the Ganado Hornets come into town. Ganado is also 2-0 in the division and they are 4-2 overall. Kickoff is Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. Come out and support the Sand Devils during this festive week.
