Sand Devils finish first at Sand Devils Classic

10 individuals finish in the top 6

The wrestling team looked very impressive last weekend as they hosted the 27th annual Sand Devils Classic. As a team they brought home the championship trophy, and ten individuals finished in the top six.


The Sand Devils were one of 23 teams from five states. They finished with 209 points. The second place team, Richfield High School (Utah), finished a distant second with 163 points, and Snow Canyon High School (Utah), finished third with 154 points.


Senior Kamron Whitewater brought home another championship in the 106 pound weight category, as well as the Cujo Award for outstanding lightweight wrestler.


Freshman Zachary Ruiz also hoisted the champions trophy in the 113 pound category, as did senior Taylor Nez, wrestling at 195.
Junior Hayden Gracia, was the runner up in the 145 pound weight class, as was senior Myron Bryant wrestling at 182.
Senior Dorian Daw, wrestling at 160, finished in third place, as did sophomore Kimball Begay, wrestling at 170.
Junior Carson Stansfield, wrestling at 132, finished in fourth place. Senior Christian Penrod, wrestling at 138, finished in fifth place, and senior Levi Telshaw, wrestling at 285, finished sixth.


Head wrestling coach Kyran Keisling was very proud of his team’s performance.


“I think the thing that made me the proudest was that they all showed up on time for the six a.m. weigh-in Saturday morning,” he said.
Coach Keisling, has no intention of relaxing as his team enters the final weeks of the regular season.


“I’m gonna push down the throttle,” he said. “I’m going to be very unpleasant to be around. Last weekend was just practice for what we’ve got to do now.”
