Overcoming obstacles

Athletes tackle various challenges – from wall climbs to ax throws – during the Horseshoe Bend Obstacle Course Race in Page on April 23. Around 320 people from across the country participated in the event, which consisted of a 4-mile off-road running course interspersed with about a dozen obstacles. Some participants said that aside from the artificial obstacles, they were surprised by the difficulty of running through deep sand.

The race was a fundraiser for the Page-based nonprofit Native Strength and Rezilience Project (NSRP), founded last year “to build strength and resilience on the Navajo reservation in the shadow of COVID.” One of the organization's goals is to help combat the high mortality rate from diabetic and pre-diabetic conditions on the Navajo Nation.
