On Monday afternoon, National Park Service personnel and the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of a cliff jumping accident at Lake Powell’s  Anchovy Point.
According to NPS reports, 25-year-old Erick Kallestewa of Hotevilla, Arizona jumped off a 30-foot cliff into the water below.  No accident occurred during the jump. Two witnesses accompanying Kallestewa stated that after entering the water he resurfaced and attempted to swim to shore but was unable to reach it due to high wind and wave conditions.

A private vessel near the scene, who had witnessed one of the subjects attempting to rescue Kallestewa, came to their assistance. Despite their efforts, they were unsuccessful rescuing the cliff jumper.
Due to the water depth in excess of 170 feet, a remotely operated vehicle was dispatched to the area to help in the recovery of the body. Search efforts resumed Tuesday morning. Kallestewa’s body was recovered 432 feet below the surface by the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Dive Team and ROV specialists at approximately 10:45 a.m.
Anchovy Point is a popular area for swimming and fishing and can be accessed from shore. It’s located between the Glen Canyon Dam and the Wahweap Marina.
The incident is currently under investigation by the National Park Service, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.
