Lady Sand Devils defeat Fighting Scouts 64-36

They finish the regular season this weekend.

The second-ranked Lady Sand Devils added three more games to their win streak last week with victories over Tuba City (54-34) on Tuesday, Monument Valley (54-17) on Thursday and Window Rock (64-36) on Saturday.

Saturday’s game was the last home game of the season and, as is tradition at Page High School, the senior basketball players were honored between the girls and boys games. The seniors on the girl’s team who played their last game on their home court were Meagan Fuller, Amy Yellowman, Mikala Benally and Myka Taliman.  Few players have played more minutes on the Sand Devils court that Taliman, who has been the team’s starting point guard since her freshman year. In honor of senior night, all the players on the girls team wore red ribbons in their hair.

And long-time girls basketball coach Jenner David also coached the final home game of his career Saturday afternoon.

Physically the Lady Sand Devils don’t stand any taller than their opponents, but talent-wise they’re head and shoulders above any other teams in their section, and Saturday’s game against Window Rock was no exception.

Camryn Nockideneh, who would go on to be the game’s leading scorer, also got the game’s first basket. Defensively, the Lady Sand Devils played a full court press – something they’ve been doing all season – which forced a lot of turnovers from the Fighting Scouts.

Most of the Sand Devils offense was generated by their defense, which converted steals and  turnovers into a transition, fast-break offense. On the times when the Scouts would score and fall back into defense, the Sand Devils used a circle offense, something they’ve been using to great success this season. With offensive contributions from Meagan Fuller, Amy Yellowman, Myka Taliman, Mikala Benally and Torrance Begay, the Sand Devils led 19-9 at the end of the first quarter and increased it to 44-20 by halftime.

With a comfortable lead, the Sand Devils second squad saw a lot of action in the second half of the game. They also played impressively.

Nockideneh led all scorers Saturday with 14 points, followed by Fuller who had nine. Yellowman, Secody and Myka Taliman each had seven points and Torrance Begay had six.

The Lady Sand Devils are now 18-4 overall and 8-0 in their section.  They wrap up the regular season this weekend playing Chinle on Friday and Ganado on Saturday.
