There’s no question this year’s Sand Devils football team is one of the best to the take the field in many years, but the Snowflake team was just a little better last Friday night. The Lobos ended the Sand Devils’ three-game winning streak, beating them 50-28, in what was dubbed “the battle of the trenches.”

The Lobos ran a spread offense pass attack which resulted in three interceptions, but also paid off with six touchdowns.

The Sand Devils began the game with an onside kick, hoping to catch the Lobos off-guard, something that has proven successful for them this year and last. But this time the Lobos were ready for it, and after falling on the ball they began their first drive from the 50 yard line.

They were able to advance as far as the 21 yard line where Sand Devils’ linebacker Kimball Begay ended their drive with an interception he returned to the Sand Devils’ 40 yard line. But, the Sand Devils’ first possession netted no yardage and ended with a punt.

Three plays later the Lobos faced fourth down and four, but, they were in Sand Devils territory and went for it, completing a pass to a Snowflake wide receiver who advanced it to the 29 yard line for a first down. Two plays later their running back broke free and ran in for the game’s first score. After a successful extra point kick they led 7-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter.

The Sand Devils’ offense put together two great drives in the first half , both of which came up just short. One drive ended on the Lobos’ four yard line and the other on their 17. Despite coming up short on offense, the Sand Devils still put points on the boards with a pick-six, courtesy of Kimball Begay.  They trailed 7-6 after coming up short on the PAT.
The Lobos offense put two more touchdowns on the board during the second quarter taking a 22-6 lead with them into halftime.

The Sand Devils offense would regain some of its mojo in the second half adding three touchdowns of their own, utilizing steady, big-yardage runs from running back Kele Meredith and a successful pass attack from both Sand Devils quarterbacks Gabe Gomez and Robert Smith, who have been alternating time under center.

Though the Sand Devils added points they failed to whittle away at the Lobos’ lead, which, during the second half, added four more touchdowns of their own. The final score was Lobos 50, Sand Devils 28.

Gomez was three for six passing for 79 yards and one touchdown. Smith was four for nine passing for 26 yards. He also had 11 carries for 112 yards and one touchdown. Meredith had 18 carries for 128 yards and one touchdown.

Justin Salabiye had two receptions for 51 yards and one touchdown. Kimball Begay had one reception for 27 yards.

The Sand Devils return home this Friday where they will battle the 2-1 Valley Christian Trojans.

Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
