PAGE – The Page Elks Lodge and the LeChee Chapter are hosting respective Flag Day ceremonies on Monday, June 14.
LeChee Chapter will have a flag-raising ceremony in LeChee at 10 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time (9 a.m. Mountain time).
Council Delegate Paul Begay of the 24th Navajo Nation Council will be the master of ceremonies.
Chapter officials said the chapter administration henceforth will fly the U.S. flag, including the Navajo Nation and the Arizona state flags, during business hours.
Lodge No. 2498 will have a flag retirement ceremony – at 806 Aqua Ave. – to retire its current U.S. flag and raise a new one at 6 p.m.
“There will be a short ceremony, which will take about 15-20 minutes,” said Bill Justice of Lodge No. 2498. “There will be four different people speaking and there will be a prayer at the beginning and at the end.”
Justice said this is called the “flag retirement ritual,” after which the event will continue outside.
“Usually, we have Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts there,” Justice said.
“It takes quite a while. People bring their flags up there and we’ve got over two years’ worth of flags. It’s just a solemn occasion to honor our American flag. The VFW will be there and we’re hoping the police and the fire departments will be there.”
Justice added that those who have not been fully vaccinated should wear a mask to the event.
