PAGE – Page Police Department on Oct. 23 responded to a fight at Safeway on 650 Elm St. at 2:22 p.m. The report indicated one person was trying to stab another with a knife.

When officers arrived, the subject reported to have the knife fled toward John C. Page Memorial Park. According to Page Police Department, “When officers arrived on the scene, the subject who was reported to have the knife fled toward John C. Page Memorial Park. Once in the park, the subject attacked an officer with a handheld weapon. The officer fired at the subject. The subject was apprehended a short time later.”

Both the officer and the subject were injured and taken to Page Hospital. The officer is expected to recover. Injuries to the subject are not known yet. The Chronicle received reports from local citizens that four shots were heard, the officer’s head was bleeding, and the subject was shot in the arm. No official reports are available yet.

Police tape was stretched around the perimeter of the park, the service road behind Safeway, and the front of RD’s Drive-in on the opposite side of Lake Powell Boulevard. Multiple agencies were on the scene with Page Police, including Arizona Department of Public Safety, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Park Service, and ambulances from Page Fire Department.

The Page Unified School District was placed in a hard lock down for the safety of students. Page High School is directly across the street from the park.

Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.  This is standard procedure when a police officer uses deadly force.

UPDATE: 10/24/2019 - 2:56 p.m.

The suspect’s name is Kendall Ray Lane, a 29-year-old male from Tonalea, AZ.  He was booked into the Coconino County Jail for 2 counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon.

A Page PD officer (we will not be releasing his name) received a stab wound to the face.  The suspect received a gunshot wound to one of his wrists.  Neither are life threatening and both were discharged from the hospital last night.

The case is still under investigation.
