A tragic weekend on Lake Powell left one child dead and a teenager with extensive injuries.

A 5-year-old boy was killed Sunday when he was accidentally hit by a vehicle at Lone Rock Beach.

The National Park Service reported a 9-1-1 call was made at 11:20 a.m. reporting the accident. Park service employees responded the beach quickly and began life-saving efforts on the child, who had suffered traumatic injuries. While giving CPR and taking other measures, park service personnel called for a helicopter to come to the beach.

The child was transported by Classic Aviation to Page Hospital, where he died at approximately 2:45 p.m.

The child’s identity has not been released, but his family lives in St. George, Utah.

A day earlier, an 18-year-old man was seriously injured while cliff jumping in the Halls Creek Bay area. Park rangers called dispatch at 10:45 a.m. to report they were assisting the man. They reported the man had been jumping with friends off a 50 to 60-foot cliff.

When the man jumped, he did not resurface and several of his friends jumped into the water and were able to pull him to the surface.

The man was brought by a boat to Bullfrog Marina where he was airlifted by Classic Aviation to St. George Hospital. The flight medic on the helicopter reported that at approximately 3:40 p.m., the man suffered an aortic rupture and was in very serious condition.

At the hospital, the teen has improved and is now listed in stable condition. He is likely to be released in a couple of days.

Both accidents are under investigation by the National Park Service.
