Chamber looking for man, woman of the year

Can help community, local charities

Posted

Do you think you deserve to be named man or woman of the year in Page? Do you know someone who deserves this prestigious title?
The Chamber Page Lake Powell is looking for a select group of men and women who are willing to work to earn the title of man and woman of the year.
The good news is during the eight-week challenge, those who participate will get to raise money for their favorite charity.
Scott Swank, a member of the chamber’s board of directors and the branch manager and vice president at Bank of the West, brought the idea to the chamber earlier this year.
Swank said he brought the idea from Albuquerque, N.M., where it was used as a fundraiser for the Leukemia/Lymphomia Society. At Swank’s suggestion, the chamber board agreed and decided to tie the contest in with it’s annual Best of Page banquet.
The general idea is four men and four women will be chosen as candidates for man and woman of the year. Beginning Aug. 21, the candidates will begin raising money. How they do it is completely up to them. The money raised will be split evenly between the chamber and the charity of the candidate’s choice. Any charity can be chosen as long as it is a 501C3 nonprofit organization.

During the Best of Page banquet, scheduled Oct. 21 at the Courtyard by Marriott, the man and woman who raise the most money will be named the winners. All the funds raised by the candidates will be split evenly between the chamber and the charity they choose.
How they choose to raise the money is completely up to them. In Albuquerque, some candidates got their businesses involved, others did car washes or yard sales and others asked friends and family to help. The only limit is creativity.
The one thing the candidates will be asked to do in Page is assist the chamber with the Best of Page fundraiser. At the annual banquet, the chamber will have silent and live auctions as part of its biggest fundraiser of the year. Each candidate for man and woman of the year can bring five silent auction items and one live auction item to be sold that night. The candidates will get credit for the price those items auction for.
Ultimately, Swank said, the goal is to have more money for the chamber.
“As a board, we already do a tremendous amount for the chamber,” Swank said. “Why not get the community involved? I believe as a chamber we need to be offering financial classes, basically Business 101. We need money to do that.”
Another step, Swank said, is those who agree to run for man and woman of the year can be used by the chamber to help other business owners and managers in town.
“We can offer to set them up as mentors, working with people like restaurants,” he said. “We all know we need to focus on customer service here in Page. We need to get money in order to get programs.”
Nominations for man and woman of the year are being accepted now. Swank said he hoped to have the candidates chosen by Aug. 9 and the official fundraising schedule begins Aug. 21. Things will end Oct. 21 during the Best of Page banquet at the Courtyard by Marriott.
At the banquet, the chamber will hand out awards for the best businesses in Page as well as community awards for humanitarian of the year and community member of the year.
