Canyon Club continues work to improve Page

Red Ball golf tourney, dinner raise funds for Grandview Knoll project

For decades, the Canyon Club has worked behind the scenes with one primary goal — making Page a better place.
The fruits of their labor can be seen throughout the city — a pavilion at Horseshoe Bend, another at Memorial Plaza by City Hall and the 4-H barns Page students use every day. But the 19 men who make up the service club have another goal in mind, an even bigger one.
They are currently working to make improvements to Grandview Knoll, a popular spot off 20th Avenue that overlooks Lake Powell and connects to Rim View Trail.
“Grandview Knoll was recognized in this last park master plan as a good site for a scenic overlook,” explained Canyon Club member and City Councilman Dugan Warner. “It’s a place where you can have ceremonial activities.”
Warner said Grandview Knoll could be popular for weddings, picnics and other fun events — if improvements are made.
And those improvements are what the Canyon Club has in mind.
The club is planning to create off-street parking with ADA accessible pathways. They hope to build three pavilions at key viewpoints down the slope to avoid impeding the views from the top.
The challenge the club has now is raising the money to do so. Every year, the club has one fundraiser — The Red Ball Golf Tournament and Dinner.

This year, the Red Ball is May 6. It is split into two events.
The golf tournament begins at 10 a.m. and runs until around 4:30 at Lake Powell National Golf Course.
The format will be a two-man scramble on the front nine with a modified scotch on the back nine. Each two-person team will be given three red balls to play with.
Teams that finish the 18 holes with at least two red balls left will be able to enter drawings for prizes, including a $1,000 grand prize.
“The odds are pretty good you will win something because we have so many prizes,” said club member Shayne Jones.
Tickets for the gold tournament cost $300 per person, which is all inclusive for golf, prizes, drawings and it also includes a ticket to the dinner.
The dinner is the second portion of the Red Ball. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott, the dinner will be a time for eating, entertainment and, hopefully, winning prizes. Golfers will get one ticket for the dinner, but those who don’t golf can buy tickets for $100 or dinner for two for $125.
The tickets cover dinner, entertainment and prize drawings. The only extra charge is for those who are interested in alcoholic drinks.
Chuck Servanti, a local DJ, will emcee the event and ventriloquist Mark Ruben will be the entertainment.
But the big event for the night is the drawings. Everyone with a full ticket will be entered into the drawings with a chance to win dozens of prizes including a five-day houseboat rental from Aramark, a river trip with Wilderness Adventures and the big one, $5,000 cash.
Jones explained to give everyone a chance at the cash, that winner is drawn first with the winning ticket held until the end of the night.
While the plans for the Red Ball are in place, the Canyon Club is still looking to sell tickets.
If anyone is interested in golfing or just joining the dinner activities — with a chance to win big — they can purchase tickets from any Canyon Club member or call Jones at (928) 640-1990 or Warner at (928) 699-6581.
The club is also open to new members. Men who might be interested in participating are welcome to visit a club meeting at noon Wednesdays at the Ranch House Grille.
