The Sand Devils have lost their last three games.

The boys basketball team is on a three-game losing streak compromising their regional standings for playoffs in Chinle this weekend. If they cannot place in the 3A North Regional playoffs they will be out of Conference playoffs and lose a chance at the state championship.

They lost to the Chinle Wildcats 57-54 on Tuesday, and they lost to Tuba City 57-54 on Thursday.

The Tuba City game was physical and aggressive.

“It was more physical than a basketball game should be,” said boys basketball head coach Russ Skubal. “It’s a miracle that my guys didn’t get hurt.”

But after the game ended and the adrenaline wore off it was discovered that Dainian Sloan had sustained an injury during the game.

Due to his injury, he sat out Saturday’s game against the Red Rock Scorpions, which was their last regular season game.

It was another physical game. The Scorpions had four players over six foot tall.

Sand Devils played without point man Dainian Sloan bringing in Dante Dugi for his second game since a shoulder injury mid season.

The Sand Devils couldn’t find their stride. During the first half the Sand Devils trailed by as many as 30 points, and the situation became more dismal in the second half when the Sand Devils collected four or five fouls each and had to be benched.

The final score was Scorpions 71, Sand Devils 51.

The 3A North regional tournament begins Thursday in Chinle.

The Sand Devils have a first round bye. They begin play Friday at 4:30 against the winner of  the Window Rock /Ganado game.
