The Sand Devil’s boys’ track and field team took fourth place in the Division III State Championship this weekend in Mesa. They finished with strong long distance and relay records.
Bowen Martin had a big day finishing first in the 3200 meter, 1600 meter and the 4x800 meter relay. Martin is the first athlete to win three state titles in one state meet since track coach Reggie Edwards did it in the 1970s. Edwards won the 100, 200 and 400 meters.
“The Page High School boys and girls track teams made one of their strongest showings in recent memory at the Arizona Division III state track meet on May fifth and sixth,” said Edwards. “With a boys fourth place team finish, there were several stand-out performances.”
During an interview with the Arizona Interscholastic Association Martin admitted he was not expecting to run in so many events. “I was nervous at first,” he said. “I was thinking about dropping the 800 meter event but I wanted to beat Dorian [Daw] since he is a senior this year.
“[Winning] feels good because I know I deserve it because I had been working hard all season to get to this point. On Friday we had the two-mile which is probably one of my easier events because it is one of my strong suits. Then next day we had the mile and I won at 4:20. I placed 8th in the 800 but I don’t have the speed for that. I’m better at the long distance events.”
Martin is already looking forward to next season.
“Next year I will just try to win the events I won this year; to try to defend my title.” said Martin who will be a senior next year.
Jacob Doyle, a high scorer on the team did not participate in most of his usual events due to an injury. His team mates noted his absence.
