The Sand Devils boy’s baseball grabbed the 3A North Regional championship title this weekend in Tuba City.
They began the tournament ranked number three in the 3A north region and started the tournament with a first round game against the Ganado Hornets who were ranked sixth. The Sand Devils pitched a shut-out, winning 12-0.
The second round had them taking on the number two-ranked Chinle Wildcats. With great defense, hard work, playing up their skills and great pitching from Colin Whitehorse they brought in the win to advance to the championship round with a final score of 7-2.
The championship round matched the Sand Devils against the Window Rock Fighting Scouts, who were ranked number five. Kimball Begay opened up the game pitching for the first three innings and then Trevor Mallavia came in to relieve him and close the game. The Sand Devils began to collect home runs in each inning.
Mallavia hit a base hit with bases loaded in the fourth inning. At the bottom of the fifth inning the Sand Devil’s pushed the ‘ten run rule’ to shut down the game with a gain of two runs against the Scouts. The game was called and the Sand Devils took the 3A championship trophy.
“I think the kids played extra well. They performed the way I thought they should all year. It was an all around team effort and great defense.” said Head Coach Ernie Rivers. “I’m very proud of them.”
The Sand Devils had five team members make the 3A all region First Team: Colin Whitehorse, Trevor Mallavia, Makaio Warner, Ian Lane, and Kimball Begay. The second all region team also had three Sand Devils; Jacob Krank, Christian White and Jonah Larson.
The first Conference game will be Friday with the times and place to be announced.
